Free sponsored school sessions
Barrie Wade has taught in schools, is Emeritus Professor of Education at Birmingham University and has written over 100 books of stories, poems and non-fiction for children. The plan is to raise money by running sponsored school sessions at no cost to the selected schools.
The system is simple:
- First, a school undertakes to raise sponsorship money by organising relevant literacy activities (e.g. a school Readathon, Spellathon, Writeathon) for which pupils are sponsored by family and friends.
- This money is collected in school and is paid directly into the "Alexandra Hospital and Mencap Challenge" charity bank account. The amount raised will be shared equally between The Alexandra League of Friends and Mencap.
- In this way pupils gain a double benefit and the only school cost is travelling expenses for the school sessions.
Inviting a writer into school:
- Is inspiring and exciting for pupils and teachers
- Encourages pupils to write and to see writing as worthwhile
- Supports the teaching of both writing and reading
- Pays dividends in pupils' development right across the curriculum, particularly in terms of planning, drafting and revising words
- Encourages awareness of style, imagery, structure and audience
- Helps children to learn how inspiration is derived from a very wide range of sources
- Provides a fresh awareness of the process and purpose of creative writing
- Gives pupils the opportunity to think about how a book is created and where it all begins and ends
We all share a commitment to help children become successful, creative readers and writers and we believe that the opportunity to work with a professional writer in school can be a real inspiration for many children.
